How to Deal with Toothaches at Home?

If you are suffering from a toothache, then the first thing you need to do is to figure out the root of your discomfort and pain. From there, you can figure out the best treatment plan for relieving any pain, swelling, or other symptoms that you might be experiencing.

All of this means that if you are going through minor to moderate irritations, then practicing home remedies for toothache can help. On the other hand, if you are suffering from an extreme toothache, then the toothache remedy should be sought from a dentist.

Home Remedies for Tooth Pain

For today, we are going to focus on people who are experiencing mild to moderate toothache. These people need home remedies for toothache pain relief. And we are going to help you with that.

The most effective home remedies for tooth nerve pain are mentioned in the list below.

  • The Salt Water Rinse

For many people, using a saltwater rinse is an effective first-line treatment. This is due to the fact that saltwater is a natural disinfectant and it can help loosen food particles and debris that might be stuck in your teeth.

Treating your toothache with salt water can help in reducing inflammation and heal any oral wounds. To practice this home remedy, mix a half teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

A hydrogen peroxide rinse works wonders in relieving pain and inflammation. Hydrogen peroxide heals toothache by killing bacteria, reducing plaque, and healing bleeding gums. To practice this remedy, make sure to properly dilute the hydrogen peroxide.

To do this, mix 3% hydrogen peroxide with equal parts of water. This can be used as a mouthwash. Make sure that you don’t swallow this mixture at all.

  • Cold Compress

If you are experiencing toothache due to trauma caused to your teeth, then using a cold compress can relieve the pain. Applying a cold compress, in this case, will cause the blood vessels in the area to constrict. This makes the pain severe.

The cold compress can also help in reducing any swelling and inflammation. To use this approach, make sure that you hold a towel-wrapped bag of ice to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time. You can repeat this every few hours.

  • Use Peppermint Tea Bags

Peppermint tea bags are excellent home remedies for numbing pain and soothing sensitive gums. For this remedy, you can take a used teabag and allow it to cool down. Once the tea bag has cooled down, then you can apply it to the affected area. Remember that the bag should not be completely cold. It should be slightly warm.

Some people prefer to put the teabag in the freezer for a couple of minutes before applying it to the affected area. This method can also help in relieving pain as it is similar to the cold compress method.

  • The Importance of Garlic

For thousands of years, garlic has been recognized widely for its medicinal properties. Garlic also has antibacterial properties. This means that garlic can not only kill harmful bacteria but it can also act as a pain reliever.

You can use garlic on a toothache by crushing a garlic clove to create a paste. This paste can be applied to the affected area. You can add a tiny bit of salt if required. Alternatively, you can also slowly chew a clove of fresh garlic.

  • Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract contains alcohol, which is known to help in numbing pain. Vanilla extract has also proven to be an excellent antioxidant and its other properties make it an effective healer.

The only requirement of this remedy is that one should use real vanilla instead of imitation vanilla. To perform the remedy, simply dab a small amount of vanilla extract on your finger or on a cotton ball. Apply the vanilla extra to the affected area a few times a day.

  • Clove

Clove has been used for treating toothaches throughout history and all across the globe. The oil in the clove can help in effectively numbing pain and reducing inflammation. Clove also contains eugenol, which is a natural antiseptic substance.

To practice this home remedy, dilute clove oil with a carrier oil, which can be sunflower or jojoba oil. Use a ratio of about 15 drops of clove oil to an ounce of carrier oil. After that, dab a small amount of this diluted oil onto a cotton ball and apply it to the affected area a few times a day. Alternatively, you can also add a drop of clove oil to a small glass of water and make a mouthwash.

Apart from these home remedies, chewing guava leaves, using wheatgrass mouthwash, applying diluted thyme oil, and chewing toothache plant leaves can help. Practicing these treatments should help in relieving your toothache.

However, if you are still experiencing pain and discomfort, then you should contact a dentist as soon as possible. The dentist will be able to help figure out the exact cause of the problem and find the best possible solution to it.
